The God from Galilee

Many years ago while in Israel I visited Cana of Galilee, in the town of Nazareth. It was exciting to be in that part of the world for many reasons. First, Nazareth is the hometown of Jesus’ parents, Joseph and Mary. Historically, this is where Jesus grew up, working in his father’s carpenter shop. Second, Galilee is very significant in scriptures. God speaks through the prophet Isaiah, “…but in the future I will honor Galilee” (Isaiah 9:1).

Jesus speaking to his disciples said, “But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.” (Matthew 26:32). And after Jesus was resurrected from the dead, he spoke to the two women who had visited his tomb: “…Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothersto go to Galilee; there they will see me.” (Matthew 28:10).

Third, Cana of Galilee is where Jesus performed his first miracle, turning water into wine (John 2:1-11). It was an honor to visit the place where that miracle was performed. There are three Christian churches built in that space in Cana, with each of these churches claiming to be on the exact spot where Jesus performed this miracle. While their claims may be in dispute, what is not is this: Jesus performed his first miracle at Cana of Galilee.

Jesus began his ministry of miracles at Cana of Galilee. On that day, he began to demonstrate the power of God upon his life by reflecting the awesome Spirit of God at work in him. Today, each of us who have confessed Christ as Savior and Lord has that same Spirit of God within us (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; 2 Corinthians 6:16). Today could be the beginning of a new display of God’s power within and upon your life.

How can you allow God to demonstrate his power today? Has God already done something miraculous in your life? If he has, then you should share your spiritual success with someone. Spread the wealth!

The place and story of Jesus’ first miracle has been preserved and is still being shared. Always remember to tell your story—a story of God’s goodness and grace toward you.
