Rejoice!

A lady was known at work for her bubbly personality—cheerful and spirited around the office. One day her workmate asked her why she was always bright and bubbly. The lady responded, “That’s the way I feel every day.” “Nobody can feel that way every day; life is not like that!”, said the workmate. To which the lady replied, “Yes, life is not like that, but you can be like that.”

In Psalm 118:24 the psalmist declares, “This is the day that the Lord has made;

let us rejoice and be glad in it.” To rejoice is to feel or show great joy or delight. It can also mean to cause joy to flow. Psalm 118:24 shows us two important things that can help bring cheers and rejoicing into our lives.

First, the psalmist makes a Declaration.

That you have today is a fact. If you are reading this blog, then you are alive and a part of the history of today. Simple facts and truths are worth celebrating. Death could have caused you to miss this day, but it didn’t. Your day may not be everything you want it to be, but at least you have a shot at making something of today. Rejoice in that!

Second, the psalmist gives a Call to Action.

Because we have this day that God has allowed us, we can rejoice and be glad in it. This is not a reaction to our circumstances, but a choice in spite of our circumstances.

This is an intentional effort to behave a certain way—just like the workmate who is always spirited and cheerful. People who are positive, hopeful, and full of cheers are living in the same world you live in—a world of good days and bad days. But they choose to be that way.

Acknowledge the gift of today and the privilege you have to see it. Then take action: rejoice and be glad, cheerful, hopeful, and positive. Cultivate the spirit of rejoicing.

Pray This Prayer

Dear God, please show me one thing today for which I can rejoice; and may my rejoicing last throughout this day. In Jesus’ name. Amen!!!

Wisdom for Your Week

Today is a gift from God. What you do with it is your gift to God and to others.
