A Fresh Supply of Mercy

They (the mercies of God) are new every morning; great is your faithfulnessLamentations 3:23

Read: Lamentations 3:17-23

At Shepherd University I teach my students some of the core concepts of economics: supply and demand, surplus and shortage. During this Coronavirus pandemic I have received more lessons about shortages than I desired. For a while there were acute shortages of sanitizers, tissue paper, cleaning supplies, paper towel, water, and other necessities. Even bicycles were in short supply!

Many people cannot afford the necessities of life, while some of us have more than we need. Those of us in this “more-than-we-need” category should keep helping those who are in need. Yet, not having what you need can be frustrating, especially when you have the means to purchase these things. And even if you purchase the things you need, they will run out and you will come back looking to restock with a fresh supply.

Lamentations 3 tells of a God who always has a fresh supply of the things we need in our lives. Your love (and mercies) they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:23). The Walmarts, Targets, and producers of this world may not be able to supply all of your needs all the time, but God can. And He provides you with a fresh supply of what you need, when you need it, and it costs you nothing!

Mercy is when you don’t get—the punishment or consequence—that you do deserve. When you mess up and don’t do right, or when you don’t do what you know is right; God replaces justice with mercy, and gives you a fresh supply for each day that you live. You should never take God’s mercy and grace for granted. Instead, live each day with the confidence that God loves you and will forgive you when you ask Him. Be thankful that God is faithful in sending you a fresh supply of mercy, each morning, so that you can start and end your day right!

Prayer for the Week

God of grace and mercy, thank you for loving me and forgiving me when I confess and repent of my sins. I need more than I can afford, but you are generous and can supply my every need. This week, please send me a fresh supply of mercy, along with the other things I need. Help me to do some good this week, so that you may get all the glory! I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
